English language proficiency as a driver of safety, certification, and digital transformation in palm oil sector

Abstract

This study examines how English language proficiency functions as a driver of workplace safety, certification, and digital transformation in the palm oil sector. The purpose is to assess whether English operates as operational infrastructure that improves communication, compliance, and technology adoption across the value chain. The research applies a Systematic Literature Review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework. A structured search on ScienceDirect returned 871 articles. Through Boolean filtering, a 2023–2025 publication window, and open-access inclusion, the dataset was reduced to 34 peer-reviewed studies for full analysis. Reference management ensured transparency, traceability, and removal of duplicates. No primary data collection was conducted. Findings converge on three interdependent domains. In safety, English-language briefings, manuals, and training reduced miscommunication, lowered accidents and near-miss incidents, improved task completion, and increased retention during onboarding. In certification, English-proficient compliance officers produced fewer documentation errors, faster audits and customs clearance, higher renewal success rates, and stronger sustainability reporting, which attracted greater investor interest. In digital transformation, technical English enabled quicker onboarding of monitoring systems, drone mapping, and compliance dashboards, leading to improved data accuracy, fewer support requests, and reduced downtime. Across all domains, English served as both a neutral communication bridge in multilingual workplaces and a prerequisite for credible governance and technological integration. The review concludes that English proficiency is measurable operational infrastructure in the palm oil sector. Practical implications include embedding English training into safety programs, compliance processes, and digital onboarding to strengthen competitiveness and sustainability.
