In the context of optical interconnects and photonic circuitry, photonic crystals offer exciting opportunities. Most notably, they can be realised on the same size as electronic microcircuits and provide novel functionality on a wavelength scale. Their working principles and some of the recently introduced device concepts are described, including superprisms, slow wave structures, dispersion compensating elements and high Q cavities.
