Abstract

Translation in social sciences is a practice which meets linguistic as well as intellectual, cultural and economic difficulties. These difficulties grow in number when the target language is not the mother tongue of the translator. On the other hand, this situation of prose translation in a foreign language gives particular evidence to what is at stake intellectually and culturally in translating social sciences. It reveals divergent traditions and mental barriers between different cultures, the degree of their openness of mind, which varies in history, and the general progress of knowledge.
