Spatializing the prison: The shaping of the penitentiary parks in são paulo and Rio de janeiro

Abstract

While the São Paulo penitentiary park is characterized by the dispersion of units throughout the state, in Rio de Janeiro most prisons are concentrated in a single neighborhood of the capital. In this article we contrast these heterogeneous arrangements, pursuing differences and resonances, and seeking to shed light on the conditions of possibility that underpin the current and repeated governmental bet on prison segregation.
