Retrovirus assembly results from the ability of a single gene product, the gag polyprotein precursor, to coalesce into a spherical particle capable of release from the cell. In conjunction with this primary process of capsid formation additional vital gene products such as the replicative enzymes and envelope glycoproteins as well as the genomic RNA are incorporated to form an infectious virus.
