This chapter deals with a South African case study that brings together academic and community-embedded views on peace to identify key factors that could contribute to peacebuilding at a community level. The discussion focuses on how these conceptions were integrated into an intervention in the local community through SCRATCHMAPS (Spiritual Capacity and Religious Assets for Transforming Community Health through Mobilising Males for Peace and Safety), a community-based violence prevention and peace promotion project aimed at mobilising religious assets and enabling spiritual capacity to promote peace. Although process and outcome evaluations of this project have been conducted, this is not the focus of this chapter which looks primarily at the factors identified through a participatory research process. How can one mobilise community assets, with a focus on spiritual capacity and religious assets, to promote community peace? To answer this question, the objectives of the SCRATCHMAPS project were to develop an appropriate theoretical and conceptual framework; understand the processes whereby religious assets, and spiritual capacity in particular, might promote peace; develop, implement, and evaluate an intervention to mobilise religious assets and enhance spiritual capacity to create peace; and draw out lessons on the participatory community-engaged research process itself. The next section outlines the process we used to pursue some of these objectives, followed by a presentation of the key findings emerging from this study. This is succeeded by a discussion on key issues emerging, with a particular focus on our growing understanding of the concept of 'spiritual capacity', and recommendations for further peace research and action.
