La production de vases en chloritoschiste

Abstract

À Madagascar, les fouilles archéologiques livrent régulièrement des fragments d’objets (vases, etc.) fabriqués dans une roche relativement tendre et compacte (chloritoschiste). Plusieurs gisements sont connus sur l’île. Des roches similaires ont été utilisées dans de très nombreuses autres cultures (depuis les Amérindiens jusqu’aux Chinois en passant par le monde arabe). L’étude pétrographique, technologique et stylistique des objets malgaches permettrait sans doute de comprendre l’origine de cette technologie et l’importance économique de cette production.On Madagascar, the archaeological excavations bring regularly to light some fragments of artefacts (vessels, etc.) made of a relatively soft and massive stone (chloriteschist/soapstone). Several deposits are known on the island. Similar rocks have been used in many other cultures (from the Amerindians to the Chinese going through the Arab world). The petrographical, technological and stylistic study of the artefacts from Madagscar would help to understand the origin of this technology and the economical importance of this production.
