Abstract In contrast to chemical intuition, fully conjugated aromatic compounds can be rapidly synthesized and crystallized in nothing but high‐temperature water. In their Communication (DOI: 10.1002/anie.201801277), M. M. Unterlass et al. report the hydrothermal crystallization of indigo, pentacenetetrone, and perinone, as well as the direct synthesis of perinone from naphthalene bisanhydride and o ‐phenylene diamine in high‐temperature water without the need for co‐solvents or catalysts. The picture shows crystals and molecules of the red pigment trans ‐perinone surrounded by water.
