Abstract

The objective of the present study was to calculate the maximum discharge flow in the Vieira River Watershed outflow using the Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model for surface runoff simulation, considering the physical data obtained from the watershed Geographic Information System (GIS). From the determination of the basin model, meteorological model and control specifications, it was possible to simulate the runoff. The application of the HEC-HMS model with information obtained through GIS proved to be an important tool for the development of hydrological studies, allowing the user to rationalize the calculation process. In centuries-old periods, critical meteorological phenomena can cause a peak flow in the Vieiras River basin outflow in the order of 1,447.6 m³/s. Being located in the municipality of Montes Claros and having its main course running through the urban area of the municipality, the basin requires careful environmental management, especially in the western portion of the land and in the urban area, in order to avoid flooding.
