Abstract

Recent electron micrograph measurements of bacterial dimensions in exponentially growing cultures of E. coli support a model of bilinear increase in cell surface area and volume, with a sharp doubling in growth rate at a discrete age during the cell cycle. The results all indicate coordinate regulation of increase of surface area and volume.
