Abstract

This study is designed to investigate English teacher qualifications in Korea. The focus of the study is on four groups of English teachers in Korea: NESTs in public schools, NESTs in private schools, Korean NNESTs in public schools, and Korean NNESTs in private schools. While the most comparative research on NNESTs and NESTs have been limited to discovering the perceptions and attitudes of the two groups, this study puts the focus on their teacher qualifications in four specific categories. The main subject for this research is job advertisements because job advertisements are concentrated on the employers' recruiting message, including the requirements or qualifications for the position. Thus, job advertisements posted by Korean schools are valuable sources that reflect English teacher qualifications in various Korean educational contexts. The study will cover the normative and immanent structures of the Korean English educational system in the process of the recruitment of English teachers in Korea.
