After an introductory section on the background to the forest planning approach in French Guiana and how it has developed, the authors explain the rationale of the methodology currently implemented. The various stages, from the choice of the area of forest placed under a plan to logging and forest conservation for biodiversity, are described together with, where applicable, the underlying research work. Although there are many outstanding issues, the synergy between forest planners and researchers under the GIS Silvolab scheme has turned out to be very fruitful, making the forest a life-size "testing ground" for the management of dense equatorial forests.
