Abstract

A total of 83 Malayan tapirs were recorded as roadkill in Peninsular Malaysia from 2018 to 2022 with an average of 16 individuals per year. The highest number of roadkills occurred in 2020, followed by 2021, 2022, 2019 and 2018. The highest number of roadkill is in the state of Terengganu (23), followed by Johor (16), Pahang (14), Negeri Sembilan (11), Kelantan (9), Selangor (7), Melaka (2) and Kedah (1). These statistics are alarming and further conservation action is required to ensure the species survival.
