In recent years many countries have liberalized the laws on medical termination of pregnancy and, consequently, a significant increase in legally induced abortions was observed throughout the world. The large abortion studies (Tietze and Lewit 1972; Andolsšk 1974; Andolšek et al. 1977; Cheng et al. 1977) confirmed the safety of first-trimester abortion performed in the hospital. On the other hand, there are more reports on serious complications of hormonal as well as intrauterine contraception, which are considered to be the most popular fertility regulation methods. All these findings strengthen the old dilemma: abortion or contraception. In evaluating this dilemma, not only should medical effects be compared with various methods, but the acceptability of these methods should also be considered.
