Abstract
This paper presents results of simulations that describe pulse evolution in a Ti:sapphire laser from the noise level to the steady state for various operating conditions. The calculations show that a fourth-order dispersion limits the mode-locking bandwidths in the laser for pulses shorter than 10 fs. It is suggested that even short pulses can be generated by more precise dispersion-compensation.
