Abstract

The majority of libraries are currently operating hybrid environments in which they subscribe and provide access to both printed and electronic materials. However, budget pressures are making it increasingly difficult to sustain duplicate print and electronic collections and many libraries are reducing print budgets in order to sustain and expand electronic purchasing. The issues influencing the degree to which this shift in favour of electronic media is taking place are discussed and cover: pressure on print budgets; new purchasing models; cost considerations; collaborative networked environments; eliminating duplication; new publishing models; user preferences; and the shift in the print /electronic ratio.
