Abstract

Chromosomes of Siamese fighting fish Betta splendens were examined by Giemsa, CMA3 and Ag-NOR. The karyotype consisted of 6 pairs of submetacentric, 7 pairs of subtelocentric and 8 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes (2n=42, NF=54). NORs were observed at two submetacentric pairs, nos. 1 and 6, at telomeric regions of the short arms. The Betta’s karyotype seems to have a derived status when compared to most species of the order Perciformes. © 2008 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
