One of the difficulties of isolating Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii from environmental samples is the abundant overgrowth of other yeast andmold species that occurs on the plates. Here we report the application of benomyl to Guizotia abyssinica seed extract growth medium to improve the isolation of C. neoformans and C. gattii from environmental samples. We validated this medium by recovering C. neoformans and C. gattii from convenience soils and swabs from a region of the United States where these yeasts are endemic. © The Author 2014.
