A typology of industrial areas in Portugal is presented, articulating productive aspects (patterns of sectorial specialization, technological-organizational structure, markets etc.) social (types of entrepreneurship, labour markets) and territorial (accessibility, settlement etc.). Simultaneously, the regional consequences of the international crisis and the 1974 revolution are pointed out, and still some macroeconomical orientations, assumed afterwards. The territories which are still largely rural but accessible have revealed an industrial dynamism above the average. On the contrary, in the two main cities (Lisbon and Oporto), the older industrialized areas exhibit decline in industrial production. -from English summary
