The role of percutaneous circulatory assist devices in acute myocardial infarction and high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention in the 21st century

Abstract

Although the use of percutaneous circulatory assist devices is gaining increasing acceptance as an adjunct to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with cardiogenic shock, their role in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) without hemodynamic compromise and elective high-risk PCI remains controversial. This is reflected by the lack of formal recommendations by the international bodies regarding the use of such devices outside the setting of cardiogenic shock. The purpose of this article was to review the current evidence for the use of these devices in patients presenting with acute MI without cardiogenic shock and in those undergoing elective high-risk PCI. © 2010.
