Abstract

Demonstrating that the discipline of mathematics is a human endeavor is important for students to understand mathematical thinking ability and interdisciplinary relationships. Perceiving mathematics as a whole rather than separate parts and parts and ensuring the integration of mathematics with real life is a necessary element for the development of mathematical thinking ability. In the study, ethnomathematics, which includes many disciplines, especially mathematics, history and art, and which is based on real life experiences, is mentioned, and the theories that are important in integrating cultural elements into mathematics lessons are mentioned. At first glance, culture and mathematics can be interpreted as two very different disciplines; but the bond between them is quite strong contrary to popular belief. Today, for mathematics education researchers, the concept of ethnomathematics, which expresses mathematics education with the help of culture, is at a very important point in the world literature in terms of mathematics education. Ethnomathematics describes that mathematics has an important place in the historical-cultural field. Considering the difficulties that immigrant students experience in intercultural integration and the difficulties they experience in school mathematics, culture-oriented mathematics education is of greater importance, especially for immigrant students. In the study, it was mentioned about the teaching methodology that will increase the mathematical understanding of immigrant students thanks to the mathematical activities based on real life by blending culture and mathematics, and that immigrant students will create effective learning by making use of mathematical problem-solving strategies in the transition between cultures, and an example of culture and mathematics activity is given with application steps. It was modeled with Type 1 from the research design and implementation method. They contribute to the fact that the application example included in the research gives an effective influence to different disciplines and elements in the lessons of secondary education and creates improvements
