Objective: This article demonstrates how ultrasound examination can confirm a preliminary clinical diagnosis of ankle ligament rupture immediately following injury so that rapid and correct treatment of the ankle can be initiated. Sonography: Ultrasound examinations can be carried out immediately on the first presentation after an injury and free of pain. No other method yields information on ankle instability with such a high level of accuracy. A prerequisite, as for all other clinical skills, is sufficient hands-on experience, mediated through qualified instruction courses by the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM).
