Abstract

This article examines thecurrent issues of the development of artificial intelligence (AI) since the middle of the ХХ century and focuses attention on the formation of scientific prerequisites and the definition of the main concepts that were defined by domestic and foreign researchers. AI is defined as the ability of machines and computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, decision-making, and data analysis.Attention is paid to various approaches to the definition of AI, from scientific to technical. Different interpretations of artificial intelligence based on its ability to model human cognitive functions are described. The issue of legal and ethical aspects of using AI was also raised. In general, all existing definitions of artificial intelligence can be divided into two large groups: the first group includes definitions that characterize the field of scientific knowledge, and the second definitions that characterize the features and propertiesof certain devices or systems. The article also pays attention to the views of foreign researchers who made a significant contribution to the development of artificial intelligence. The contributions of John McCarthy, who coined the term "artificial intelligence", are highlighted, as well as approaches to the definition of AI from such notable scholars as R. Kurzweil, D. Castro, J. Nu, and P. Winston. Their work covers various aspects of AI, including modeling human intelligence and building computational systems capable of learning and decision-making.
