Abstract

A23187 and ionomycin are naturally occurring polyether carboxylic acid ionophores capable of transporting divalent cations across biological membranes. The equilibrium constants for protonation of A23187 and formation of 1:1 complexes with monovalent and divalent cations have been determined in methanol-water mixtures and in suspensions of phospholipid vesicles. With ionomycin, equilibrium constants for protonation and formation of 1:1 complexes with divalent cations have been determined in methanol-water mixtures. © 1993 IUPAC
