In this chapter, we briefly discuss the historical background on the subject and then review several recent studies of bereavement outcome trajectories. We focus on findings from prospective studies that challenge traditional ideas about bereavement. These studies illustrate the importance of examining the full spectrum of bereavement outcome patterns.
