Abstract

In the first part of a series of articles on the use of genetic engineering to enhance the properties of wool, the relationship between genes, wool fibre structure and wool properties is reviewed. The detailed fine structure and protein chemistry is discussed in relation to the fibre's stress-strain curve and other mechanical properties. The current division of opinion in interpreting the property-structure relationship will be explored further in the second part of the series.
