Abstract

Sustainable forest management is one of the most contentious issues in contemporary environmental management: it encapsulates many of the most difficult problems in economics and biology. With international agreements being pursued to achieve sustainable management of tropical forests, (most of which are publicly-owned), by the year 2000, and similar measures being proposed for temperate forests, this book is timely. This is a comprehensive review and integration of the social, economic, and conservation issues involved in the management of public forests. Illustrations and case study materials are drawn from Asia, Australasia and North America.
