Abstract

The development of digital technology has led to the increased use of instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp in various activities, including in academic settings. WhatsApp provides two display modes, namely light mode and dark mode, which are designed to improve users' visual comfort. This study aims to compare the level of usability between the two modes based on the perceptions of North Sumatra State Islamic University (UINSU) students. The method used is a quantitative approach with the System Usability Scale (SUS) instrument. A total of 80 respondents were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing 20 statements (10 for each mode), which were then analyzed by calculating the SUS score and conducting statistical tests using paired sample t-test. The results showed that the average usability score for light mode was 45.34, while dark mode was 48.69. The t-test resulted in a p-value of 0.0004 which means there is a significant difference between the two modes. Although both are still below the usability ideal threshold, the dark mode tends to provide a more comfortable user experience. These findings suggest that display design has an influence on perceived comfort and should be a concern in the development of application interfaces.
