Given the low frequency and very wide amplitude of these invasions, are the affected human populations able to react to the spectacular recrudescence of these insects? How to manage a locust invasion, which is often said to be a "natural catastrophe"? Information is presented from a stint of participant observation at the Centre national de lutte antiacridienne in Mauritania during the last major invasion in 2003-2005. After describing the jeopardies related to the proliferation of locusts and the plural management of this phenomenon, the effectiveness of the fight against the locusts is brought under review.
