Abstract

Antoine Doré, Managing Proliferation. Can We Make an Arrangement with Migratory Locusts? Migratory locusts vanish (or nearly so) and then are forgotten only to suddenly swarm back a few years later. Given the low frequency and very wide amplitude of these invasions, are the affected human populations able to react to the spectacular recrudescence of these insects? How to manage a locust invasion, which is often said to be a "natural catastrophe"? Information is presented from a stint of participant observation at the Centre national de lutte antiacridienne in Mauritania during the last major invasion in 2003-2005. After describing the jeopardies related to the proliferation of locusts and the plural management of this phenomenon, the effectiveness of the fight against the locusts is brought under review.
