This article reviews both the measures taken during the mature phase of the Chilean urbanregional planning State (1950-1979), and the measures taken by the private sector (1980-2010); these initiatives might have affected positively and negatively the feasibility of walking in Santiago and its rural environment. This paper focuses on the concepts used in the corresponding periods, models and projects so as to analyze the current thinking aimed at achieving diverse and sustainable ways to inhabit space.
