Abstract

Laser Texturing (LT) is the advanced surface modification process, which can be used to modify the metallic surface to obtain different surface topography with nano to micro surface roughness. Different types of lasers such as millisecond, microsecond, nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond are adopted to treat different varieties of materials to find different texturing patterns with various shapes and sizes. Due to higher flexibility, efficiency and accuracy, laser texturing has been used to improve wear behavior characteristics, adhesive bonding between coating and substrate, lubrication, osseointegration and create super-hydrophilic and super-hydrophobic surface. Hence, this technique has been widely adopted in optical, biomedical, tribological industries. The current study reviews to discuss the biological aspects of engineering surfaces using laser-texturing techniques. This study presents the effect of different surface parameters on the biological responses and bonding strength in the coating surfaces as well as the superhydrophilic or super-hydrophobic surfaces.
