A Sustainable Model? University Presidents Assess the Costs and Financing of Intercollegiate Athletics

Abstract

The article discusses a study commissioned by the Knight Commission that addresses the benefits and costs of intercollegiate athletics. The research involved 119 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) university presidents and was completed in two stages consisting of quantitative research and qualitative telephone interviews. The high percentage of participation suggested that the issues on intercollegiate athletic financing are seen as matters of profound consequence. It concludes that the study revealed an environment that is ready for change.
