Abstract

Based on transmission electron microscopy the identity and structure of Navicula pelliculosa (Brébisson ex Kiitzing) Hilse, a small diatom common in eutrophic waters, is discussed. The examination of a culture of “Navicula pelliculosa” from the Indiana University Culture Collection (strain No. 668), which has been used fairly extensively in laboratory studies, shows that it has been misidentifled. In the light of the present study it is suggested that this strain represents Navicula muralis Grunow. © 1976 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
