E-voting in america: Current realities and future directions

Abstract

This paper presents a snapshot of the current status of voting methodologies in the United States as of November 2016. The authors present the methodologies currently employed to facilitate voting including paper based and direct recording electronic systems. This is followed by a discussion of voter confidence in the election system where e-voting systems are utilized, particularly in the areas of auditing, security, influence, and human-computer interaction (HCI). The paper concludes with a brief summary of the future of e-voting, including what technology is on the horizon, and a discussion of future research directions.
