Abstract

The article presents a musical piece by the renown modern Russian composer Yuri Chugunov who uses the free jazz style. The authors conduct an interpretational analysis of Suite of Moods for saxophone and piano, studying the compositional and stylistic characteristics of this musical cycle as a typical example of modern saxophone jazz music. Using a combination of source-study investigation with instrumental, comparative and historical research methods is one of the methodological bases used in thise study. The scientific novelty consists in defining the cycle patterns in Chugunov’s suite, studying the work’s musical language resources, organically combining jazz stylistics with avant-garde musical techniques.
