Mobile phone wastes from a user perspective

Abstract

Introduction: Due to improper waste management, the large volume of discarded phones has seriously harmed the environment. This issue is further exacerbated by forecasts indicating that phone production will continue to rise over the next several decades. Objective:To examine the knowledge of mobile phone users regarding mobile phone waste management in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Mexico. Materials and Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach was employed, based on information collected through interviews by saturation sample criteria. Results: Users have limited understanding of the concept of recycling, are unaware of its environmental consequences, and require economic incentives to participate in recycling programs. Moreover, there are no local management strategies, as evidenced by the limited information available to users and the absence of collaboration networks among key local stakeholders. The relevance of this work lies in its focus on an underexplored topic within the study area, with findings that are relevant for the formulation of strategies by companies and local authorities, and that highlight how insufficient environmental education affects waste management practices.
