Abstract

This paper examines those passages of The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life in which Durkheim criticizes How Natives Think, in order to assess the extent and the significance of his disagreement with Levy-Bruhl's book. Underneath their obvious and currently much overemphasized dispute regarding evolutionism, there lurks yet another disagreement, not generally noticed, over the primitive nature of religious institutions. © P.U.F.
