Abstract
Brazilian emigration means something new for a country historically formed as an immigrant destination. More than exclusively demographic, this transition represents a social and political fact, which is being progressively recognized. This contribution evaluates discourses present in the press as relevant sources of information for the social perception of this change. Thus, it analyzes news and articles about Brazilians abroad that were published from 2001 to 2005. © 2006 Instituto de Estudos Avançados da Universidade de São Paulo.
