Recent data from charcoal analysis of Near and Middle Eastern sites indicate that the forest/steppe zone penetrated into what Is now steppe during the Neolithic and Bronze Age. In Mesopotamia we have definite evidence for the importation of timber. It is not until the later historical periods that we begin to see evidence for deforestation, but it is difficult to separate the role of man from that of climatic change as a cause of the change in vegetation. © 1992 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
