Passive Comfort Strategies for Typical Peruvian Meso-Andean Houses

Abstract

This article focuses on the climatic behavior of typical houses in the Meso-Andean zone of Peru. Firstly, the usual construction systems used in this region is described. Secondly, some climate parameters of Cuzco (3.399 meters above sea level) and Alto de Poclús (3.086 meters above sea level), both located at an altitude range of the Meso-Andean zone are reported. Following this, the hygrothermal performance of a typical dwelling situated in Alto de Poclús is monitored. According to these weather conditions and building systems, various passive design strategies to achieve thermal comfort in this type of dwelling are proposed. This study is expected to serve as a reference for future research on this topic, on the one hand. On the other hand, we hope to raise awareness about improving the dwelling where people live in mountainous areas in the Andes.
