Abstract

In this work, 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2-thione (HOTAT) was synthesized, and its chemical structure was characterized using FTIR and 1H NMR. The corrosion inhibition performance of HOTAT for 10# carbon steel in 2% NH4Cl solution was studied by weight loss and electrochemical methods. The results showed that HOTAT is a good corrosion inhibitor for 10# carbon steel in 2% NH4Cl solution. The inhibition efficiency of HOTAT increases with increasing inhibitor concentration and decreases with the temperature. The results obtained from potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicate that HOTAT behaves as a mixed-type inhibitor. The adsorption of HOTAT on the 10# carbon steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and its adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic.
