Sudden cardiac death in the young athlete

Abstract

The management of competitive athletes at risk for SCD is complex and challenging. Although SCD is an uncommon event, as medical practitioners we must be prepared. This includes a rapid response to deliver high-quality basic life support, which includes early defibrillation. Pre-participation screening is useful for identifying subgroups of patients in need of further investigation. High-risk patients should be referred for further evaluation.
