Abstract

Long-term oral anticoagulation is a cornerstone of stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Patient education should be provided regarding the need for anticoagulant therapy, anti-coagulant mechanism of action, adverse effects, required monitor-ing parameters, and treatment adherence to prevent stroke and thromboembolic events. Medical-surgical nurses have the knowledge and skills to advocate for positive outcomes and safety in patients with AF who take anticoagulants for stroke prevention.
