Abstract

The article discusses the relationship between religion and modern philosophy in three moments of Chilean 19th C history. It asserts that with the foundation of La Revista Católica in 1843 the attitude of the clergy reaches a turning point moving from its concentration on the defense of its jurisdictional powers to its participation in the public sphere as interlocutor in the ideological fi eld imposed by modern civilization. The arrival of Pius IX as Pope, condemning liberalism, inaugurated a new moment of confl icts between church and state.
