Abstract
Red meranti (Shorea leprosula Miq) is one of the superior species to be planted in intensive silviculture techniques (SILIN). However, a problem that often occurs in the field is the attack of Coptotermes sp termite resulting in plant death. The aims of this study were to obtain data and information regarding Coptotermes sp termite attack on S. leprosula plants and to observed termite nests which were found between planting space. The method used in this study was undertaking observations of termite attack on S. leprosula plants at the age of 6, 7 and 8 years to investigate the frequency and intensity of termite attack by measuring the distance between plants and termite nests. The observed parameters were termite attack frequency, attack severity level and the number of termite nest. The results showed that the symptoms of termite attack occurred on plants at the age of 7 and 8 years. At the age of seven years, termite attack frequency and intensity were 2% and 2%, respectively, whereas at the age of 8 years, the attack frequency and severity were 9,2% and 8%, respectively. Nests were found in planting space and the distance between plants and nests were about 5-17m. The source of termite attack on S. leprosula plants were from mounds found between planting space.
