Abstract

THIS paper will attempt to compare the frequencies of assault and homicide' in six societies and to consider the differences in the light of the concept of "protest masculinity" and the status-envy hypothesis of identifica- tion. The ethnographic material used in the comparison is reported in Six Cultures: Studies of Child Rearing (B. Whiting, ed., 1963).
