Abstract

Floods have deserved analysis and study from ancient in Spain. Reports and memorials prepared after the development of an important large event include, from the eighteenth century, maps of affected areas. These early maps have been improving in terms of progress mapping and incorporating new methods of analysis. It has advanced from the hazard maps to maps that incorporate methods of vulnerability assessment. This paper analyzes the most important facts in the development of flood mapping in Spain and assesses the current situation, when 60/2007 EU Directive on flood risk management in the European territory has been an important step for mapping risk.
