Abstract

The article deals with conflicts in urban production in São Paulo (Brazil), considering the orthodox urban economy in contrast to the critical heterodox economy and taking as a case study the Largo da Batata, part of the Urban Operation Consorciada Faria Lima implemented under the Statute of the City, a Latin American icon of the applied principles of urban law and the right to the city. In this text, we ask why and how the ruling classes, and their hegemonic practices of production and reproduction of capital, materialized in urban land, do not control urban spaces of special public interest entirely, as we observed in the Largo da Batata. There, the elites must confront the resistance of other urban actors who have seen how exclusion and inequality have increased in recent years, frustrating their possibility of procuring equitable urban spaces.
