HAND DRAWING: WHY IT STILL MATTERS FOR ARCHITECTS IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Abstract

The text presents the Spanish translation of the lecture given by Professor Juhani Pallasmaa on February 17, 2024, at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture, in a seminar on the importance of hand drawing for architects in the digital age. In the paper, Pallasmaa holistically addresses the fundamental significance of drawing in the field of architecture and highlights the attributes of hand drawing in relation to digital drawing, which the current technological paradigm has generalized globally. Pallasmaa proposes a redefinition of drawing by hand, as well as of its intrinsic values such as lack of precision, playfulness and the interaction of the senses. The author argues for a synthetic vision in architecture, and how it may be becoming distorted in the process of contemporary architectural production and design.
