Abstract

Concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) are for solar photovoltaics what offshore wind power is for wind power; this is the hypothesis of this work. In analogy to offshore wind cumulative global CPV installations of approximately 3-7 GW are predicted for the year 2020. Scenarios are based on paths for CPV following offshore wind in shape, but with a delay of ten years which is approximately the time lag the first larger offshore wind farms were built earlier than the first large CPV plants of 2011. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.
